Zayn’s Bedroom Makeover

This summer we completed a series of projects for our good friends (and David’s college roommate for many years) who just closed on their first home. Zayn’s bedroom makeover was extra special because the little man himself helped make it happen.

Before

In order to get Zayn’s approval we knew that the room would need to be fun. That meant creating a big impact and incorporating his love for all things trucks & planes while also creating a room that he would not immediately outgrow. Stephen took to Pinterest for mural inspiration and got working on a plan of his own - a mountainous corner where Zayn’s crib (and future bed) would be positioned.

The Process

We spent most of our time prepping the walls by sanding down and filling any imperfections. We also took down the ceiling vent for cleaning and painting.

// FAQ
When painting with bold colors don’t neglect the ceiling. Painting the ceiling something other than white decreases the contrast with the adjoining wall and allows your eye to flow more easily. In this room we painted the upper part of the wall and the ceiling the same color.

When planning our mountain mural we first drew an outline in pencil. Starting with the mountains furthest in the distance we used the lightest color. We then worked our way forward - where the color became richer. This mimics how the human eye perceives distance & color - mountains in the distance are low in detail and lighter in color than those up close.

We added the cutest plane decals that we discovered on Etsy along with toy planes suspended by fishing line over Zayn’s crib. The effect allowed the art to jump off the wall and added a lot of interest to the corner.

We used a white Ikea dresser and swapped out the pulls to appear more custom. The new wood pulls are warm and the same we used in the nursery project - this created some continuity across rooms. Finally, with trucks on the mind, we downloaded truck prints from Etsy and had them printed at CVS. We used command strips to adhere the modern and clean frames to the wall - we felt this would be safest when hit with a rouge teddy bear.

Lastly - the details. David hemmed curtain panels so they would sit just above the heater - not only for safety but because we don’t love when curtains hit the floor in a kids room. Toy trucks in a couple unexpected places were an added detail along with a few of Zayn’s favorite books.

Final Thoughts

This was a fun and easy project that only took us a few days to complete. We created a fun and interesting room with just a little creativity and on modest small budget. Zayn loved the result and and is the perfect reminder to have a little fun.
